On October 8, 2019, a tweet by a foreign tourist, Gia A, from San José, Costa Rica, sparked a heated online debate among Kenyans. Gia posted a 35-second clip of herself feeding a giraffe at the Giraffe Manor in Nairobi, captioning it 'Hello Twitter world, hope you all are having a nice day. This place: Nairobi, Africa.'
Kenyan online users quickly flocked to her comment box to correct her, pointing out that Nairobi is the capital city of Kenya, a country in Africa, but not a city in Africa. Some users wondered which Nairobi she was referring to, while others joked about needing a visa to visit the 'other' Nairobi.
As one user, Eric Mwangi, noted, 'Saying Nairobi, Africa is like saying London, Europe. Say Nairobi, Kenya like you would say London, UK.'
The Giraffe Manor in Nairobi was listed among one of the greatest places to visit in 2018 by Time Magazine, with rates starting at $565 (Sh56,500) per person per night.
