On Monday, a 25-year-old man was arraigned before a Maralal court after being arrested with 100 bullets at Kisima trading center in Samburu.

Lelekupa Toloris pleaded not guilty to charges of being in illegal possession of 100 rounds of ammunition of 7.62 51mm.

The court heard that the circumstances raised a reasonable presumption that the ammunition was to be used in a manner prejudicial to public order.

Appearing before Principal Magistrate Richard Koech, Toloris also denied being in illegal possession of a military jungle bag.

The court ordered the accused to be detained for seven days until a pre-bail hearing on October 14, 2019.

According to the law, a person convicted of being in possession of ammunition without a certificate for a weapon which is prohibited is to serve not less than 7 years imprisonment.

Earlier this year, the government gave all persons holding illegal guns and ammunition until September 30, 2019 to surrender them to local authorities.
