On May 9 and 10, 2012, a tragic event unfolded in Naisambu, Trans Nzoia County, when Samson Kamau Njoroge murdered Alice Wangui Kamau, the mother of his child born in 2008.
According to court records, Kamau had attended a court case where the deceased sought to compel him to take care of their child. The deceased went missing on that night, sending distress calls to her family, claiming she had been kidnapped and was being raped repeatedly.
Police launched a search, and a text message from the deceased to her aunt, Eunice Wairimu, revealed that she had been kidnapped and was being raped by her captor. Kamau's maid, Veronica Njeri, testified that her employer did not spend the night at home on the fateful day, instead washing clothes and leaving for work early the next morning.
On May 13, 2012, Njeri noticed a new padlock on the borehole at the compound, which sparked her curiosity. The following night, police arrested Kamau, who returned the next morning with officers who retrieved the deceased's body from the borehole.
Justice Hillary Chemitei, in his judgment, found Kamau guilty based on circumstantial evidence, including the fact that the deceased's body was retrieved from his compound. Kamau denied involvement, claiming he was drunk and couldn't drive on the night of the murder.
On October 8, 2019, the High Court in Kitale sentenced Kamau to 25 years in prison for the heinous crime.
