Expansion of the Nairobi-Nakuru highway to ease traffic congestion is expected to commence in December, according to Transport and Infrastructure Cabinet Secretary James Macharia.
Published on October 8, 2019, the project will feature a four-lane dual carriageway in the first phase, with the option to increase to six lanes depending on traffic demand.
The highway's expansion plan has been marred by allegations of tendering malpractices, but the dismissal of these claims has put the project back on course.
CS Macharia says completion of the road works will herald a new dawn for business in the region and open up the hinterland to investment.
The Italian firm awarded the tender to carry out the expansion has committed to completing the project at a cost of 160 billion shillings.
Separately, the transport CS has announced that rehabilitation works on the Moi South Lake Road in Naivasha will commence next week, following a public outcry over the road's dilapidated state.
