On April 12, 2019, Samuel Gichuhi Mwangi, a driver working for Interways Works Limited, had drinks at Saga's Hotel in Roysambu. A strange woman joined his table while he was on a phone conversation, claiming to be disposing of a parcel of land in Ol Kalau.
Four other women later joined them, and three agreed to meet the land vendor in Allsopps area. At some point, they requested Mwangi to join them. He later woke up at the hotel to find his two mobile phones missing.
Mwangi is believed to have given his bank details to the women after they administered a stupefying drug on him. He reported the matter at Kasarani Police Station and was advised to visit Equity Bank urgently to confirm the status of his account.
He found a total of Sh 737,472 having been withdrawn from his account. Sh 141,000 had been transferred to Mary Wanjiru Muthama, Sh 300,000 to Nancy Muthoni, and Sh 86,000 to Francis Maina Mwaniki. Different amounts of money were also transferred to several phone numbers.
On October 8, 2019, Mary Wanjiru Muthama was charged with stealing Sh 737,472 from Mwangi. She denied the charges before Principal Magistrate Steve Jalango of Makandura Law Courts and was released on a cash bail of Sh 300,000.
