On December 7, 2017, a peace building forum was held in Lodwar, Turkana County, to discuss security in northern Kenya regions. The Director of the IGAD Centre for Pastoral Areas and Livestock Development, Muchina Munyua, emphasized the need for cooperation to ensure security in the region.
Munyua noted that the ongoing disarmament exercise would promote infrastructure development and help to repossess firearms illegally held by civilians and bandits. The exercise will be carried out in Elgeyo Marakwet, Baringo, West Pokot, Turkana, Samburu, and Laikipia Counties.
Francis Lowoth, the commissioner in charge of development projects in arid areas of Uganda, commended both Kenya and Uganda for their peace building initiatives. He stated that these initiatives have encouraged harmonious living among neighboring communities.
Turkana County Governor Josphat Nanok acknowledged that inadequate water supply is the biggest challenge and cause of conflict among pastoralist communities.
