On Monday, Stephen Ndolo Kioo, a 38-year-old doctor, and Violet Nafula Wanjala, a house help, were arraigned before Ruiru Senior Principal Magistrate Clara Otieno. They were remanded for five days at the Ruiru Police Station to enable police to complete investigations into the death of Jane Murugi Mukuha, Kioo's wife.
According to investigating officer Patrick Okumu, Murugi's body was found in the washroom of their Membley estate home in Ruiru last Friday. Okumu told the court that Kioo had called a neighbour on Friday morning and informed him that his wife had committed suicide by hanging herself in the washroom.
However, Okumu said the neighbour's story of events was inconsistent with Kioo's, and that police needed more time to carry out thorough interrogation, investigate their call data and messages, and get test results from the Government Chemist.
"The duo's story of events are inconsistent, hence more time is needed to carry out thorough interrogation, investigate their call data and messages, and get test results from the Government Chemist," Okumu said.
The couple had three children aged seven and nine, while the youngest is two-months-old. The suspects' lawyer, however, opposed the application by the DCI, saying police had not demonstrated why they needed to detain his clients further.
On October 8, 2019, the magistrate ruled that the suspects be detained for five days at the Ruiru Police Station.
