Kenya: More Shocking Evidence On Willie Kimani Murder to Be Tabled Tuesday ¶
Published on October 8, 2019
Four police officers and their informer are on trial for the 2016 murder of lawyer Willie Kimani, his client Josephat Mwenda, and taxi driver Joseph Muiruri.
On Tuesday, the High Court was set to hear more evidence in the trial, including a new witness who was expected to introduce a recorded video confession.
According to the testimony of Peter Ngugi, the fifth accused person in the case, the three victims were trailed, abducted, and killed in cold blood.
Ngugi's testimony outlined how he was approached by the Officer In-charge of Kabete Police Station in 2011, who asked him to inform on insecurity cases in the area. Ngugi agreed and continued to inform the officer until he was transferred to Bungoma.
It was not until April 2016 that the officer, who had been posted to Mlolongo Police Station, called Ngugi and asked him to visit. During one of the visits, Ngugi was introduced to three police officers, including Sergeant Fredrick Leliman.
Ngugi's testimony revealed that Leliman had planned to kill Willie Kimani, who was a small-bodied man and short in stature, as he was a threat to Leliman's job. The plan was to have Ngugi identify Kimani at the Athi River Law Courts on June 23, and then Leliman and Sergeant Mwangi would arrest him.
Ngugi's testimony also revealed that the three victims were taken to a bush where they were handcuffed and bundled into the boot of a car. However, Leliman and Mwangi could not agree on whether to kill them, with Leliman and another officer insisting that they had to be killed.
