On October 8, 2019, the African National Congress (ANC) revealed that it was considering selling an equity stake in South African Airways, although it had no clear strategy for such a deal.

Ethiopian Airlines, one of the fastest-growing airlines in Africa, has expressed interest in buying a stake in the struggling South African national airline to help it deal with its mounting debt problem.

South Africa's state-owned enterprises have been in a chronic financial state, weighing down the economy. Finance Minister Tito Mboweni has had to allocate additional funds to these debt-ridden companies, including SAA, power utility Eskom Holdings, and the South African Broadcasting Corporation.
