Published on October 8, 2019, the Government of Kenya has announced the construction of a Sh160 billion dual carriageway between Nairobi and Mau Summit will begin in December.

Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia made the announcement in Nakuru, where he was speaking during celebrations to mark World Habitat Day.

The planned dual carriageway, which will be 187km long and consist of four-lanes on both sides, has been awarded to a French firm after a tender process.

The construction comes months after four foreign firms contested a decision by the Kenya National Highways Authority to award the tender to the Rift Valley Connect consortium.

At the same time, the CS said the national government would also expedite renovation of Moi-South Lake Road, which has been the subject of protests by residents of Naivasha due to its disrepair.

The CS said work on the road would begin on Thursday, aiming to address the concerns of residents who have been blocking the dilapidated road for two weeks.

Speaking during the celebrations, Macharia emphasized the importance of infrastructure in the region, particularly as Nakuru town gears towards attaining a city status.

He also commended an innovation in Nakuru that turns human waste into briquettes, noting that it would save forests from being destroyed for firewood.
