On October 7, 2019, a disturbing incident unfolded at Lavington Mall in Nairobi, where a foreign national allegedly racially profiled and insulted security guards stationed at the mall.
According to witnesses, the man not only racially abused the security guards but also referred to another woman who tried to calm him down as a monkey.
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has since taken swift action, announcing on October 8, 2019, that it had terminated the employment of the foreign national following the incident.
ICRC's Nairobi chapter stated that the decision was made after meeting with witnesses as part of investigations into the incident, which was first reported on Twitter by Yebeltal Gatachew.
The organization apologized to those who were insulted and to those who were on the scene during the incident, expressing appreciation for those who came forward to report the incident.
ICRC emphasized its commitment to maintaining the trust and confidence of the public, Kenyan authorities, and the communities it serves in Kenya and the region.
