On the eighth day of the search operation, the Likoni Channel retrieval effort has taken a new turn with the military taking over the scene and local divers from government and private agencies, as well as a team of South African divers, scouring the ocean.
According to Kenya Ferry Services Chairman Danson Mwazo, the team of divers will now rely on technology to help identify objects under the ocean, in a bid to retrieve the bodies of 35-year-old Mariam Kighenda and her four-year-old daughter.
Published on October 7, 2019, the operation has been hindered by poor visibility, the depth of the ocean, and a lack of proper equipment.
Despite the challenges, the family of the deceased has hired five South African divers through a company known as Subsea, who are working alongside local divers to locate the bodies.
With media teams kept at a distance and the military in charge, the team of divers is expecting to receive more technological equipment, which is set to arrive in the country on Monday night.
