On October 6, 2019, the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) launched a nationwide anti-graft campaign, calling on its faithful to support the fight against corruption.
The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has welcomed the move, with Chief Executive Officer Twalib Mbarak stating that the decision to ban 'dirty money' in churches is a step in the right direction.
According to Mr. Mbarak, the Catholic Church's decision to rally its faithful to support the fight against corruption and ban all donations without proper source is a positive move. He noted that corruption has reached disturbing levels in the country, with some individuals channeling their ill-gotten wealth to religious organizations, mainly the church.
The EACC has pledged to continue partnering with willing stakeholders and all like-minded Kenyans in the fight against corruption. The commission has also called on citizens to cooperate and emulate the example set by the Catholic Church.
As part of the campaign, the Catholic Church plans to open corruption desks in all its churches to track cases reported by the public. The faithful will also be required to declare their intention to fight corruption at their places of work.
