Published on October 7, 2019, Ethiopian Airlines is poised to make a significant acquisition deal with Airbus, purchasing 20 A220 planes.

The airline's CEO, Tewolde GebreMariam, has confirmed that the deal should be completed by the end of 2019.

The acquisition comes in the wake of the Ethiopian Air crash in March, which led to the grounding of Boeing 737 Max planes and resulted in the loss of 157 lives.

Despite having 28 Boeing 737 Max aircraft on order, Ethiopian Airlines is shifting its focus to the smaller Airbus A220, which will enable the airline to incorporate more direct flights into its operations.

As Africa's largest airline, Ethiopian Airlines serves over 80 countries worldwide and is renowned for its impressive fleet size, revenue, and passenger numbers.

With this acquisition, the airline is set to expand its operations and improve its services, cementing its position as a leading air carrier in Africa.
