On 7 October 2019, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) announced plans to recruit up to 10,000 teaching interns to address a shortage in the teaching sector.

The interns will be deployed to primary and secondary schools, with 4,300 teachers targeted for primary schools and 6,000 tutors for secondary schools.

Qualified candidates are expected to apply by 23 October 2019 and be ready for posting to any part of the country.

According to TSC, the successful candidates will be paid a monthly salary of Sh. 15,000 for secondary school teachers and Sh. 10,000 for primary school teachers, subject to statutory deductions.

It's worth noting that the interns will be required to have personal accident insurance to cover personal risks during the 12-month internship period.

Additionally, the TSC has set aside Sh. 2 billion to hire the teachers, with the possibility of being absorbed on permanent terms depending on performance and funds availability.

As reported earlier, TSC Chief Executive Officer Nancy Macharia told MPs that it would require up to Sh. 2 billion to recruit the intern teachers, stating, 'We need these teachers so that they can help us in addressing the shortage on the teaching staff.'
