On October 7, 2019, Interior and Coordination CS Fred Matiang'i made a crucial decision to lift the directive that required all cargo from Mombasa Port to Nairobi to be transported via the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR). This move came after widespread public outcry from players in the transport sector, who were concerned about the loss of jobs and the negative impact on the coastal economy.

According to sources, the government will now consider alternative solutions to address the challenges surrounding freight transport. This decision is a significant relief to transporters, who can now use any form of transport to move goods from the port.

Speaking on the matter, Kenya International Freight and Warehousing Association (KIFWA) Chairman Roy Mwanthi confirmed that transporters can now use any mode of transport to move goods from Mombasa port to Nairobi. 'We agreed anyone can transport cargo using any mode of transport from Mombasa port to Nairobi. The meeting also resolved that nomination of cargo can be done in Mombasa depending on the wish of the importer,' Mr Mwanthi said.

As a result of this decision, the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) will now take up the role of nominating undocumented cargo based on vessel rotation, volumes, and freight capacity. This role was previously handled by clearing agents on behalf of their clients.
