Published on October 7, 2019, the government has faced criticism for the slow recovery of the Likoni ferry tragedy victims' bodies, which plunged into the Indian Ocean last Sunday due to bad weather and possible shark attacks.
The Likoni ferry tragedy has brought back memories of the Mtongwe ferry disaster in 1994, which left 272 people dead after the rescue operation failed to recover any bodies.
Despite a multi-agency operation, the recovery efforts have been ongoing since last Sunday without any positive results, leading some Kenyans to blame the government for not being willing to find the bodies.
However, the government has argued that diving is a risky affair that requires trained people with a lot of experience, and the seawater of Likoni Channel is 70 meters deep, making it a challenging operation.
The state has asked for more time, explaining that divers must prepare well, put on protective gear, and increase visibility to avert marine life attacks.
As the recovery efforts continue, the government has pleaded with Kenyans to bear with them, assuring that they are doing their best to retrieve the bodies.
