On the final day of the World Championships in Doha, Qatar, October 6, 2019, Timothy Cheruiyot led from start to finish to claim Kenya's fifth gold medal in the men's 1,500m final.
Cheruiyot clocked 3:29.26, ahead of Algeria's Taoufik Makhloufi (3:31.38) and Marcin Lewandowski of Poland (3:32.72), who took silver and bronze respectively.
Having dominated the IAAF Diamond League Series for three consecutive seasons, Cheruiyot finally secured his maiden gold medal at the global event, having settled for silver in 2017.
With his training partner and defending champion George Manangoi missing out due to an ankle injury, Cheruiyot was the clear favorite to win, and he did not disappoint.
Kenya's other representative in the race, Ronald Kwemoi, finished seventh in 3:32.72, fading off in the later stages after a strong start.
Cheruiyot's victory marked the fifth gold medal for Kenya at the championships, following compatriots Ruth Chepngetich (marathon), Beatrice Chepkoech (3,000m steeplechase), Conseslus Kipruto (3,000m steeplechase), and Hellen Obiri (5,000m).
