On October 6, 2019, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) issued a warning to Kenyans against purchasing electronic devices from traders lacking proper trade documents, including licenses and permits.
The DCI stated that buying stolen electronics from dubious dealers poses a significant risk, as the devices may have been obtained through violent robberies or theft.
According to the DCI, traders without proper premises often source their devices from armed gangsters who have robbed innocent citizens, resulting in serious harm or even death.
The DCI advised Kenyans to exercise caution when purchasing electronic devices, insisting on receiving receipts with clear itemization of the device's particulars and keeping copies of the receipt electronically.
Failure to comply with these guidelines may result in severe consequences, including being found in possession of suspected stolen property, which may lead to a death sentence.
Dealers in electronics have been urged to implement security measures, such as providing unique security codes, to deter the sale of suspicious goods.
Kenyans have also been encouraged to report any suspicious goods to the police.
