On October 6, 2019, Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua urged churches to reject money from corrupt leaders, saying it was hypocritical to pray against corruption while accepting questionable donations.
Mutua praised the Catholic Church for its stance against corruption and its decision to hold weekly prayers against the vice, but emphasized that church leaders should take bolder steps to reject 'dirty money'.
“It is hypocritical to call for prayers against corruption whereas some priests and pastors are receiving questionable money from politicians. We have invited corruption to our altars and pulpits. God is surely not pleased,” Mutua said in a statement.
He suggested that instead of praying for corrupt politicians, church leaders should refuse their donations, saying, “Imagine if a Priest or Pastor told a corrupt politician, “Thanks but we will not accept your contribution,”
The Catholic Church in Kenya had announced measures to support the war on graft, including banning cash donations and endorsing mobile cash transfer. The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) welcomed the move and called on other religious organizations to follow suit.
