Manchester United's woes continued as they suffered a shock 1-0 defeat at Newcastle United on Sunday, with teenager Matthew Longstaff scoring on his Premier League debut.

Longstaff's superb strike in the 72nd minute sealed the win for Newcastle, who had struggled in the opening weeks of the season.

Manchester United, who are languishing just two points above the relegation zone in 12th place, have now lost three successive league games without a win.

The Red Devils' only victory in their last five matches in all competitions came on penalties against minnows Rochdale in the League Cup.

United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be under pressure to improve results quickly, with the international break providing a welcome respite.

Manchester United's last win away from Old Trafford was in March, when they beat Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.

They are now winless in eight consecutive top-flight away fixtures for the first time since a run of 11 from February to September 1989.

Their haul of nine points after eight games is their worst tally at this stage of a top-flight campaign since the dark days of 1989.
