Published on October 6, 2019, the Catholic Church of Kenya has taken a significant step in the fight against corruption by banning cash donations.
The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has welcomed this move, citing that corrupt individuals have been channeling ill-gotten wealth to religious organizations.
EACC CEO Twalib Mbarak praised the Catholic Church's decision, stating, "The decision by the Catholic Church to rally its faithful to strongly support the fight against corruption and ban all donations without proper source is welcomed."
He emphasized that corruption has reached disturbing levels in the country and that corrupt individuals often channel their ill-gotten wealth to religious organizations.
Mbarak called on other religious organizations to emulate the Catholic Church's example and ensure proper accountability and transparency in handling financial donations.
The Catholic Church's decision to ban cash donations is part of a six-month national campaign to support the fight against corruption.
Under this campaign, church donations will be made through cheques or mobile money, and any gift exceeding Ksh.50,000 must be declared and officially acknowledged.
The Catholic Church has also spoken out against leaders using the pulpit as a political platform, declaring that political statements will not be allowed during liturgical celebrations.
