Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has sparked a heated debate after directing the suspension of dredging activity on the shores of the Indian Ocean in Likoni, Mombasa county, to facilitate the recovery mission for Mariam Kigenda and her daughter Amanda Mutheu, who drowned at Likoni Channel on September 26.

According to reports, Raila, who was in Likoni on Saturday, October 5, to condole with the family, issued the orders in his capacity as the African Union's High Representative for Infrastructural Development.

"I want to give an order here that the dredging works stop immediately so that those who are working here can work without interference," Raila ordered, further directing that stringent measures be put in place to avoid such a tragedy from ever taking place again.

While some Kenyans have welcomed the directive, others have questioned Raila's capacity to issue such orders.

Below are some of the reactions following the orders by the ODM leader:

  • Philemon Antony: "Raila's directive is a welcome move. It shows he is concerned about the welfare of Kenyans."
  • Timothy Mbaya: "Raila's orders are a clear indication that he is committed to ensuring that justice is served in this matter."
  • The Nabii: "Raila's directive is a step in the right direction. It shows that he is willing to take bold steps to address the issue."
