On October 6, 2019, a week after he went missing, the body of Police Constable Hesbon Anunda was found in a thicket about 100 meters off the Kizingitini-Mbwacumwali Road in Lamu County.
Constable Anunda had gone missing on October 2 from Kizingitini Police Station, prompting a search in the area. However, his G3 rifle, which had 60 bullets, was found missing when his body was discovered.
Police launched an investigation into the incident, but the motive behind the killing remains unknown.
Meanwhile, in Kilifi County, a senior police officer died in a self-inflicted accident along the Mazeras-Kaloleni Road. Chief Inspector Henry Marube, the Officer Commanding Rabai Police Station, lost control of his car and hit a road culvert on Saturday night, resulting in his death.
His death brings the number of police officers killed on duty this year to over 40, a significant drop from the 78 officers killed in 2017. In 2018, 536 police officers were injured in the line of duty, with most cases resulting from road accidents and encounters with terrorists.
