On October 6, 2019, a devastating incident occurred in Muruka Village, Kandara Constituency, when the walls of a quarry collapsed, resulting in the death of a 30-year-old man.
The victim, identified as Joseph Mwangi Kinyanjui, was reportedly crushing stones when the walls crumbled, burying him alive.
According to witnesses, attempts to rescue him were futile due to the debris, and his lifeless body was found buried beneath the rubble.
The quarry, which is approximately 20 feet deep, has been a subject of concern for local authorities, with the area sub-county administrator, Fredric Munyua, confirming that he had written to NEMA offices in Murang'a demanding an inspection of the facilities.
Munyua stated that the quarries employ over 300 locals, and shutting down operations could negatively affect their livelihoods.
Area MP Alice Muthoni Wahome faulted NEMA for failing to inspect and recommend the closure of quarries that pose a danger.
