On October 5, 2019, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga ordered the immediate stoppage of dredging at the Port of Mombasa, citing interference with the Likoni ferry tragedy retrieval mission.
According to Raila, the dredging exercise was causing pollution in the ocean's sea bed, resulting in poor visibility for divers. He directed the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) to halt the operation, saying, 'I want to give an order here that the dredging works stop immediately so that those who are working here can work without interference.'
However, in a shocking display of disregard, the KPA resumed the dredging exercise on Sunday morning, ignoring Raila's directive.
The move has left many Kenyans surprised and questioning Raila's authority to give orders on public works and servants.
