On October 6, 2019, the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) CEO Victor Okioma sounded the alarm on the growing problem of bars operating within learning institutions.

According to Okioma, the rise in drug and alcohol use among students is directly linked to the violation of a law that prohibits bars from operating within schools.

Earlier this year, regional commissioners were instructed to ensure that no bars are located within 300 meters of learning institutions to prevent disruptions to the learning environment.

However, Okioma lamented the lack of enforcement of this directive by authorities, calling for stricter measures to be taken to protect students.

Narok County Commissioner Samuel Kimiti echoed Okioma's sentiments, emphasizing that the issuance of licenses to bars within schools should not be politicized.

As a result, Narok government administrators have pledged to work with NACADA to shut down bars operating within schools and revoke their licenses to safeguard the well-being of students.
