On a night that saw Tottenham Hotspur's winless streak extend to 10 Premier League games, goalkeeper Hugo Lloris gifted Neal Maupay a bizarre opener in the third minute of the match.
As Lloris tried to catch a Pascal Gross cross, he instead stumbled backwards into his own goal, allowing Maupay to head home the opening goal.
However, the night took a turn for the worse for Lloris as he suffered a freak arm injury in the process of trying to break his fall, forcing him to be replaced by Paulo Gazzaniga.
Aaron Connolly compounded Tottenham's problems by doubling Brighton's lead on his first Premier League start, slamming in the rebound after Gazzaniga blocked his close-range effort.
Connolly then sealed the win for Brighton with a well-taken strike for his second goal, securing the Seagulls' first home win since March.
With this defeat, Tottenham have now taken 11 points from a possible 24 this term, putting pressure on manager Mauricio Pochettino.
