On October 5, 2019, a devastating attack shook northern Rwanda, leaving a trail of death and destruction in its wake.
According to police, unidentified gunmen stormed the Musanze district, a popular tourist destination known for its Volcanoes National Park and mountain gorillas, killing eight people and injuring 18.
The victims were brutally attacked with machetes or knives, while others were shot dead, a police statement revealed.
"Security forces were quick to provide emergency services to the residents of the area, and investigations are still ongoing to find these terrorists," the statement added.
The attack is the latest in a series of incidents targeting the region, which has been repeatedly hit by Rwandan rebels operating from the Democratic Republic of Congo.
One such group is the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda, created by Rwandan Hutu refugees in eastern DRC after the genocide of Tutsis by majority Hutus in Rwanda in 1994.
Just last December, rebels launched a similar attack, resulting in the deaths of two Rwandan soldiers.
