On October 5, 2019, a brutal attack shook northern Rwanda, leaving a trail of death and destruction in its wake.
According to police, the attack occurred in the Musanze district, a popular tourist destination known for its Volcanoes National Park and mountain gorillas.
Eight people lost their lives in the attack, with six being killed with machetes or knives and the others shot dead.
"Security forces were quick to provide emergency services to the residents of the area and investigations are still ongoing to find these terrorists," a police statement read.
The area has been a target for Rwandan rebels operating from the Democratic Republic of Congo, with one such group being the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda.
This rebel group was created by Rwandan Hutu refugees in eastern DRC after the genocide against Tutsis by majority Hutus in Rwanda in 1994.
The attack is the latest in a series of incidents in the region, with the last one occurring in December 2019, resulting in the deaths of two Rwandan soldiers.
