On October 5, 2019, a brazen robbery attempt in Eastleigh, Nairobi County, was foiled by the very people who were supposed to protect the community - police officers.
According to the police report, three officers from Kayole police station were part of a six-man gang that stormed a hotel room, armed with pistols and demanding that the occupants surrender all their money.
The victims, Mohammed Hassan and Abdullahi Yusuf, reportedly surrendered Ksh.6 million in dollars, but as soon as the robbers left, they raised the alarm, and police on patrol responded.
However, to their surprise, the gang members were fellow officers from Kayole police station. The police also recovered Ksh.3.5 million and a pocket phone without a battery.
Two other suspects, including a police officer, PC Mwaniki, and a police informer, escaped with the remaining money. The three arrested officers - CPL Wilson Cheruiyot, PC Daniel Kipkorir, and PC Alex Kandie - were found with a pistol each and 45 rounds of ammunition.
They are currently being held at Pangani police station, while detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Starehe are pursuing the suspects as investigations continue.
