Kenya Railways has backtracked on its decision to prohibit passengers from carrying cooked foods and drinks on the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), following widespread backlash from Kenyans.

On October 4, 2019, the company had issued a public notice banning food stuff and beverages into the SGR termini and stations, citing concerns over safety and security.

However, in a statement shared with media houses on October 5, 2019, Kenya Railways announced that children under three years and passengers with special needs would be accorded special consideration.

Adults, however, will still not be allowed to carry food or any alcoholic drinks while traveling using the SGR.

According to the statement, the measures taken are intended to 'enhance the safety and security of our customers' and 'protect children's rights and prevent disturbance to customers.'

Kenya Railways is also engaging with service providers at the SGR stations and on board the Madaraka Express trains to consider complaints regarding the quality and affordability of food and services rendered.

As the company continues to serve its customers better, it appeals to them to cooperate and provide feedback on their experiences.
