On Saturday, October 5, 2019, Japanese athlete Toshikazu Yamanishi made history by becoming the first Japanese athlete to win the 20km race walk gold medal at the World Championships in Doha.

Yamanishi clocked an impressive time of 1:26:34, leaving behind Russia's Vasiliy Mizinov, who competed as a neutral athlete, in second place with a time of 1:26:49. Swedish athlete Perseus Karlström secured the bronze medal with a time of 1:27:00.

Kenyan athlete Samuel Gathimba, who had previously won a bronze medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, struggled in his debut at the World Championships, finishing 32nd with a time of 1:40:45.
