Former councilors who served in the defunct local authorities in Kisii County have been living in misery, with some becoming paupers, due to the lack of payment of their gratuity.
The group, led by chairman Casper Gichana, has appealed to Kisii Governor James Ongwae to fast-track the processing of their gratuities, which they claim are owed to them under the County Act.
According to the County Act, former councilors are entitled to a gratuity of Sh1 million each and a monthly stipend of Sh30,000.
However, despite the County Act and a 2015 Senate approval of a petition to have former councilors receive a gratuity of Sh18 billion and a monthly stipend of Sh30,000, the payments have not been made.
“We will soon organize street protests should the Government continue ignoring our plight,” said Gichana, adding that they have attempted all means possible to get the attention of all Government agencies but have failed.
The Councilors’ Pension Bill, 2014, which was passed by the county assembly and assented to by the governor, also provides for the payment of gratuity to former councilors.
