On a luxurious note, Villa Rosa Kempinski in Nairobi has taken coffee to a whole new level by introducing a 24-carat gold cappuccino. The drink, which costs Sh5,500 per cup, has been making waves among coffee lovers, but does it live up to its luxurious price tag?
According to Mohammad Mohammad, the director of Food and Beverages at Villa Rosa Kempinski, the edible gold has health benefits, including smoothening and brightening skin. However, it's not ideal for those with metal allergies, as it takes 24 hours for the gold flakes to go through the digestive system.
The coffee is made with gold flakes from Dubai and edible petals from Italy, which are sprinkled on top. The petals are mildly sweet, but the gold flakes are tasteless and have no texture, as they are super light in weight.
Adding gold to meals is a trend that has been in existence around the world, although it doesn't add any flavor to the food. Villa Rosa Kempinski decided to introduce this gold cappuccino in Nairobi because making it using Kenyan ingredients was achievable, unlike in other destinations.
They picked cappuccino from other hot drinks because of its artistic presentation, and adding gold flakes enhances the artistry. So, does a 24-carat gold cappuccino taste better? The answer lies in the taste buds of those who dare to try it.
