Nigerian Box Office: Nollywood's Top Performers in September 2019 ¶
According to figures from the Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN), Nigerians spent a total of N294.860 million watching movies at cinemas throughout September 2019. This is a significant drop from the N590.9 million spent in August 2019.
The figures show that the month of September started on a high note, with moviegoers spending N101 million from August 30 to September 5. However, the revenue dropped by the third week of the month, with cinemas making only N78 million.
Despite the release of 'Rambo: Last Blood', moviegoers spent even less the following week. The top three Nollywood winners for September 2019 are:
1. 'Love is War' ¶
Directed by Omoni Oboli and written by Chinaza Onuzo, 'Love is War' tells the story of a loving couple torn apart by their individual governorship ambitions. The film features Nollywood royalty, including Richard Mofe Damijo, Jide Kosoko, and Akin Lewis. Despite only being released on September 27, 2019, the movie has grossed a total of N7 million in just two days.
2. 'The Millions' ¶
Written by Tunde Apalowo and produced by Chika Lann, 'The Millions' follows the story of five guys who come together to carry out the biggest heist in the country. The lead con man is played by Ramsey Nouah, who is supported by Blossom Chukwujekwu, AY Makun, Ali Nuhu, Toyin Abraham, and Nancy Isime. The movie has grossed a total of N12.5 million.
3. 'The Gift' ¶
Directed by Oluseyi Asurf and written by Tomi Adesina, Asurf, and Ugochukwu Isreal, 'The Gift' follows a single dad who falls in love with a single mother. The movie has grossed a total of N17 million by its third week in theatres.
These figures are a testament to the enduring popularity of Nollywood movies in Nigeria. Despite the drop in revenue, these films have managed to captivate audiences and rake in significant earnings.
