On Friday, October 4, 2019, a 25-year-old woman, Lucy Nyira, succumbed to her injuries at the Nakuru Level Five Hospital after being doused in petrol and set ablaze by her husband.
According to doctors, Lucy had sustained severe burns, with 25% of her body affected.
Her husband allegedly set her on fire after a domestic quarrel, locking her inside the house and refusing to let her out.
Lucy had traveled to Nairobi the previous day to purchase items to sell, but her husband's actions left her with severe burns on her face, arms, legs, and upper body.
Speaking to Citizen Digital before her demise, Lucy narrated how her husband had locked her inside the house and set her ablaze, saying, 'When I got home, he had locked the door and told me that I would spend the night in the cold. This was after even calling him explaining that I was stuck in traffic. He slapped me and I don’t know where he got the petrol from, he poured it on my face and set me ablaze.'
The suspect is currently in custody pending investigations, according to Nakuru County Police Commander Stephen Matu.
