On October 4, 2019, Lamu County Director of Education Joshua Kaaga confirmed the shutdown of six more primary and nursery schools in the region, citing poor infrastructure and failure to meet education standards.

The affected schools include Amu Kindergarten, Flying Angels Academy, Ummah Academy, Tumaini Academy, Mpeketoni Premier Academy, Nagele Public School, and FPFK school, which had a combined total of 448 pupils.

According to Mr. Kaaga, most of the schools had failed to register with the Ministry of Education, while others were closed due to poor infrastructure.

These closures come on the heels of a crackdown ordered by Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha last week following the collapse of classrooms at Precious Talents primary school in Dagoretti South, Nairobi, which claimed the lives of eight pupils.
