As of October 4, 2019, you can transfer ownership of a motor vehicle online through the National Transport Safety Authority (NTSA) website.

To initiate the transfer process, both the buyer and seller must first register for individual accounts on the TIMS platform at https://tims.ntsa.go.ke/login_csp.jsp.

Upon registration, the buyer and seller must create individual accounts, selecting the appropriate registration options (individual, car dealer, financial institution, or company) and filling in the required details.

It is essential to subscribe to SMS alerts for successful transactions by clicking on the subscribe SMS option at the top right corner of the page.

Once registered, the seller can proceed to transfer ownership by following these steps:

  • Click on VEHICLE REGISTRATION to access the menu.
  • Click on APPLY FOR TRANSFER OF OWNERSHIP.
  • Click on CREATE NEW and key in the vehicle registration number.
  • Click on INQUIRE to find information about the vehicle, then click VIEW to get more information.
  • Upload a scanned copy of the logbook.
  • Under New Vehicle, the seller should select whether they are an individual, company, dealer, or financial institution.
  • Key in the national ID number if making the transfer as an individual, or key in the PIN number and click the ADD option if transacting as a company.
  • Proceed to security verification, select MOBILE, and then select SEND VERIFICATION CODE to receive the code on your phone.
  • Once the seller clicks SUBMIT, the buyer will receive notification via SMS that the vehicle has been transferred to them and that they are required to either accept or decline the transfer.

To accept the transfer, the buyer must log in to the TIMS platform, click on VIEW to see the vehicle details, and then select VERIFICATION MODE and click SEND to receive the code on their phone.

Key in the verification code and either ACCEPT or DECLINE the transfer (decline will revert the vehicle back to the owner).

If the buyer clicks on ACCEPT, they must fill in the required information and then click on SUBMIT for the application to be sent to NTSA for processing.

After completing the transfer process, the buyer's logbook will be ready within seven working days.
