Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi has urged the Njuri Ncheke elders to reconsider the dowry expenses in the Meru community, citing the high costs as a major obstacle to young men getting married.

Speaking at a meeting on October 3, 2019, Governor Murungi stated that there is a need for a more reasonable dowry payment to prevent young men from being exploited.

"We have seen some families paying up to KSh 1 million and others up to KSh 1.1 million. The Njuri Ncheke, who have the authority to amend traditional laws, should ensure that the dowry payments are reasonable," Governor Murungi said.

He also called for laws to protect young women from female genital mutilation (FGM) and other forms of exploitation.

However, the Njuri Ncheke elders have rejected the governor's proposal, saying that it cannot be ignored.

"The proposal cannot be ignored because we have been receiving complaints where some people are being paid up to KSh 2 million. As elders, we will meet to discuss this issue," said Mbaya Muthamia, the secretary of the Njuri Ncheke.
