Published on October 4, 2019, residents of Embu town have raised concerns over the increasing number of foreign beggars in the area.

According to security enforcers and community leaders, the beggars, who are said to be from Tanzania, are often accompanied by able-bodied individuals who collect the money they raise.

Embu National Chamber of Commerce and Industry chairman Mugo Mate has called on the police to investigate claims of an extortion cartel operating in Embu, Kerugoya, and Chuka towns using the beggars to fleece the public.

"We are informed that there is a house in Embu town where the beggars are housed. We have already raised the matter with the police, the county government, and the department of children services," Mate said.

Residents have also expressed concerns over the treatment of the beggars, who are often left in open places exposed to harsh weather conditions.

Embu West police commander Julius Meli has confirmed that investigations have been launched into the matter and that arrests will be made soon.

"We are also concerned about the rising number of beggars in town. We are going to make arrests soon and deport those found to be here illegally," Meli said.
