On October 4, 2019, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) took decisive action against 36 teachers who had engaged in professional misconduct, including having sexual relations with learners.

According to a gazette notice, TSC Chief Executive Officer Nancy Macharia announced that these teachers had been deregistered and would no longer be allowed to teach in any school, including private institutions.

"In exercise of powers conferred by section 30(1) (e) of TSC Act, the commission wishes to notify the public that the persons whose names appear in the notice have been deregistered," said Mrs Macharia.

The affected teachers were removed from the register between March and June 2019.

"A person shall not engage in the teaching service unless such a person is registered," Mrs Macharia emphasized.

This move comes as 51 other teachers face disciplinary action for similar offenses.

Earlier this year, TSC dispatched its commissioners to six regions across the country to hear disciplinary cases, with verdicts expected to be announced this month.

Notably, TSC received 1,000 cases of indiscipline among teachers in 2019, with 600 cases registered across the 47 counties and 400 cases registered at the TSC headquarters.
