Motorola Razr 2019: A Foldable Phone to Compete with Samsung and Huawei

Published on October 4, 2019, a report by CNET stated that Motorola's foldable phone, the Razr 2019, could hit the market by the end of 2019. The phone is expected to compete with Samsung's Galaxy Fold and Huawei's Mate X.

Although there is no official confirmation on the release date, Motorola still plans to announce its device by the end of the year. According to a report by Letsgodigital in August, the device was speculated to be released in Europe on December 2019 or January 2020 with a price tag of around EUR 1,500.

The initial release of the device had been planned for somewhere in the summer of 2019, but the reason for the delay hasn't been specified in the report. Motorola seems to be following the tracks of Samsung and Huawei, which both introduced foldable devices by mid-2019.

After rivals Samsung Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X were both delayed, the lack of news around the new Razr had led many to conclude the project had been ditched. However, Motorola's smartphone makers were also facing the same production issues Samsung and Huawei faced, given the delicate screens on these phones.

Motorola's original Razr flip phone (Razr 3) is still one of the most recognizable phones of all time and continues to be immensely popular among old-time users. The new touchscreen Razr 3-like foldable smartphone will be Motorola's latest addition to the luxury segment.

News going around is that Motorola had been working on this secretive foldable phone for a while now, and it honestly seems like a revival for the good old Motorola Razr brand. According to a patent from 2 years ago, the Motorola Razr 2019 will have a screen that is inwardly foldable like the classic Razr flip phones.

Although over the course of the last few months, some details about the Moto folding phone have leaked confirming the patent that the phone will have a clam-shell design like the Moto Razr phone. Concept renders of the Motorola Razr 2019 show the phone folding from top to bottom like the original Razr instead of the inwards and outwards folding Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X.

The new foldable device will also not be very spec-heavy, as it is expected to sport a Snapdragon 710 chipset with up to 4 or 6 GB of RAM and 64 or 128 GB of storage. It's rumored to be powered by a 2,730 mAh capacity battery which indicates Motorola's inclination towards a slimmer device.

One upside is that this new foldable Moto Razr will definitely be cheaper than its counterparts by Samsung and Huawei, but certainly more expensive than top-tier non-folding smartphones. We will have to see how it holds out in front of the consumers.
