Published on October 4, 2019, a project touted to be one of the six mega stadia promised by the Jubilee government in various counties has stalled. The 384M Kirubia stadium in Tharaka Nithi county was launched by Deputy President William Ruto in June 2016.

According to Ruto, the stadium was part of the government's promise to upgrade sports infrastructure in the country. However, the project has made little progress since its launch, with no signs of construction activity on the ground.

The stadium, which was expected to be completed in 2017, is situated about 2km from Chuka town, off the Meru-Embu highway. Once complete, it will have an international standard tartan track, a football pitch, changing rooms, and a sitting capacity of 4,500.

Despite the delay, Governor Muthomi Njuki remains optimistic about the project's prospects. The land on which the stadium stands was donated by the Mugwe community.

The project's inactivity has raised questions about the government's commitment to delivering on its promises. The Kirubia stadium is one of seven stadiums earmarked for upgrade by the national government.
