On October 4, 2019, the Tanzanian government announced a new initiative to offer amnesty to individuals accused of economic sabotage.

As part of this initiative, the government has opened a special bank account at the Bank of Tanzania where those accused can deposit the money they have stolen in exchange for having the charges dropped.

According to the public prosecutor, Biswalo Mganga, 467 people charged with economic sabotage have pledged to return the stolen money to the state.

President John Magufuli extended the amnesty deadline to October 6, 2019, from the initial deadline of September 29.
