On October 4, 2019, a devastating road accident occurred at Awasi along the Kisumu-Kericho highway, claiming the lives of 13 people and leaving several others injured.
The accident involved an Eldoret Express bus, which was headed to Nairobi, and a truck traveling in the opposite direction. The truck's trailer plowed into the bus from the right side, resulting in the tragic loss of life.
According to Nyanza Regional police Vincent Makokha, 12 of those who died were in the bus, while the truck driver also lost his life on the spot.
Among the survivors, Elizabeth Awino, who was heading to Nairobi from Bondo, was left with deep cut injuries. As she lay on a blood-stained bed, writhing in pain, she expressed gratitude to God for sparing her life, saying, "My God…You are great. I thank you," as nurses administered pain killer drips.
