At least 13 people lost their lives in a devastating road accident that occurred on the Kisumu-Nairobi highway in the early hours of October 3, 2019.
The tragic incident involved an Eldoret Express public service bus and a truck carrying sugarcane at Pala area near Awasi, approximately 10 kilometers from Kisumu city.
According to County Police Boss Benson Maweu, the bus was traveling from Siaya and had picked up additional passengers in Kisumu before heading to Nairobi.
"It's true we had an accident last night (Thursday) around 2 am after a collision with a truck ferrying sugarcane," Maweu confirmed on Friday morning.
Initial investigations suggested that the bus driver attempted to overtake a vehicle but unfortunately collided head-on with an oncoming truck.
"Preliminary investigations indicate that the driver was overtaking. Unluckily, there was a truck coming and a head on collision happened," Maweu said.
