On October 3, 2019, Swedish diver Volker Bassen offered to help retrieve the bodies of Miriam Kaghenda and her daughter Amanda Mathieu, who drowned in the Likoni ferry tragedy.
Bassen, who has extensive experience in deep water diving and has established several diving training schools in Kenya, said he would deliver the services for free if given a chance by the government.
"If given the chance I will deliver the services purely on humanitarian ground and not asking for anything in return," he said.
Bassen, who has been in Kenya for over a decade, has been involved in several rescue missions and has all the necessary tools and equipment to use in the search and recovery mission.
He explained that his plan is to attach a rope and a lifting bag, which can be inflated to lift the car up to the water surface.
Bassen said he would deploy his two boats, one equipped with electric-like sight scanners, GPS, and eco-sounders, to aid in the recovery mission.
He added that he has experience in recovering bodies from deep water, having successfully recovered the body of a Swiss national from Lake Michelson in 2012.
