On the night of Thursday, October 3, a devastating accident occurred at Pala near Awasi trading centre in Kisumu County, leaving a trail of death and destruction.
According to eyewitnesses, the Eldoret Express bus, which was heading to Nairobi, collided with a truck at around 11:30pm, resulting in a head-on collision.
Kisumu County Police Commander Benson Maweu confirmed the accident, stating that at least 13 bodies and 35 casualties were counted by 2:30am on Friday, October 4.
"The bus was travelling from Kisumu towards Kericho on the Kisumu-Nairobi Highway," Maweu said. "The driver tried to overtake a cane tractor and was involved in a head-on-collision with the trailer," he added.
Of the 13 people who died, 12 were in the bus, including a child, while the other was the truck driver. The bodies of the deceased were taken to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital, while survivors are undergoing treatment at the facility.
The bus was towed to Awasi police station.
