On October 3, 2019, Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA) issued a recall of batches of Sure lubricated condoms due to quality concerns.
The affected batches, with numbers 17dn754 and 17dn052, were distributed through KEMSA by the government to public institutions, free of charge.
However, the Pharmacy and Poisons Board later revealed that additional batch numbers of the product also needed to be recalled.
The board assured that the non-compliance was batch-specific and did not impact the entire product of Sure condoms.
Condoms are usually recalled if they are found to burst easily or bear holes, which could compromise their effectiveness in preventing HIV transmission.
The recall comes just months after the National Aids Control Council revealed that there are 52,800 new HIV infections yearly.
